Serbia – South Korea (32-31)

Principe Felipe, Zaragoza. January 12, 15:45

Serbia do not find opposition with Serbia. Serbia started their way in the WCh with a clear victory over Korea. The physical and tactical superiority of the Serbs was expressed in front of a Korean side that do not reach the 190 cm of average height. In the 30 first minutes, the thrower Momir Ilic showed the way to the victory with five goals, so Serbia reached the half time with the clear advantage of 14-9. In the second period, Vujin and Prodanovic made their appearance to kill the match. Korea just showed speed, but nothing else. Stanic was chosen as the MVP, but the shots of Ilic were decisive.

THE FACT: The five centimeters of difference between both height averages (1.86 and 1.91) was decisive to settle the Serbian control.

STATEMENTS

Veselin Vukovic (Serbian head coach): “We started a little bit nervous because we are a young team and it was the beginning of the championship but after some minutes we started playing much better although we missed some easy shots. With our first rotation we did things better. The second half was very seriously; we had the luck to be in front of the board with six, seven goals and had the time for young players to gain experience. This is a big competition for them and it is important that five or six players were able to play today”.

Momir Ilic (Serbia): “We were a bit nervous at the beginning of the game but we played very good defence, which was the main goal before the game. We played with the  help of the defence, which was excellent and we got to halftime four goals in front. For the second half we had the agreement  to play the same kind of defence and to be very sure and strong in offense. Our quality was enough to get a gap in the second time. We deserved this win”

Lee Sang-Sup (Korean head coach): “First of all, congratulations to Serbia. In the first half we had a clear chance, many chances. We missed some throws also but we could have made it. Right after our goalkeeper got injured and we kind of lost our mind and our chances to win went away. This is my feeling right now”.

Kim Dong Cheol (Korea)“This is my first experience in a World Championship, I am a young player, even though we lost today the experience will be useful for us and we are already looking forward to preparing the next match”.
